Our Learning

Science

February 2026

This half term in Laurel class, our topic has been Look Up!, with a focus on The Sun, Earth and Space. The children have explored how the sun gives us light and warmth, and learned about objects we can see in the sky at night. A highlight of the term was our visit to The Halo in Haslingden, where the children enjoyed looking up at the structure and experiencing being high up, as well as looking down at fields, homes, buildings and people below. In class, the children used torches and globes to explore how the sun works as the Earth moves, looked at images of the sun, and took part in related activities. They also experienced different light environments, including warm lights to represent the sun and darkened soft play sessions to explore space and nebulae, supporting curiosity and engagement through sensory exploration.

Autumn Term

November 2025

All the children have settled really well into Laurel Class. This term, we have enjoyed weekly sessions with Paul from Live Music Now and from Martina from Tracing Steps. The children have engaged really well with the sensory resources in Tracing Steps and particularly enjoyed using the huge magnetic shapes. Paul comes in to class every Friday morning to complete a Music session. The children loved hearing him play his trumpet and enjoyed changing the sound it made using their hands. Well done Laurel Class!

Settling In

September 2025

Laurel Class are getting into the swing of things this term—quite literally! With weekly Forest School sessions, the children have been embracing the outdoors: cooking delicious food over the campfire, relaxing in hammocks, and even swinging from trees!

Back in the classroom, we’ve been busy in Food Technology, learning how to prepare tasty and nutritious meals as part of a healthy diet. Our budding scientists have been exploring the differences between living and non-living things, and more recently, discovering what plants need to grow and thrive.

In English, we’ve been diving into the uplifting story Giraffes Can’t Dance, using it as a springboard to explore emotions, confidence, and the joy of different music and dancing.
