Unicef Rights Respecting Schools

February 2025

“I have the right to an education”

Unicef Rights Respecting Schools Article 28

In Hawthorn Class, we are committed to making learning accessible and engaging for all our pupils. As a Rights Respecting School, we ensure that our teaching reflects Article 28 of the UNCRC, which states that every child has the right to an education.

In Maths, we use Numicon, a multi-sensory resource that helps children understand numbers through touch and sight. This supports our learners in developing key mathematical skills in a way that meets their individual needs.

In Food Technology, pupils learn essential life skills such as measuring, counting, and following instructions. These activities not only build confidence in numeracy but also promote independence, ensuring every child can thrive both in and outside of school.

By making learning fun, practical, and accessible, Hawthorn Class is upholding Article 28, ensuring that every child, regardless of their sensory or communication needs, receives the education they deserve.

Science

November 2024

In Science, we are learning all about the seasons.

Each week we enjoy reading our sensory story 'Tree - Seasons Come, Seasons Go' by Patricia Hegarty. We have enjoyed an autumn sensory walk at Queen's Park, and have sorted and explored our autumn collection. We read 'Leaf Man' by Lois Ehlert, and made our own leaf man. We have also created some beautiful autumn art. We are looking forward to exploring winter next and this has been helped already by the recent weather!

English

September 2024

This week in Hawthorn, we are reading the book “Night Monkey, Day Monkey”

We have used Communication boards to support us with the story and have explored different props. The children then had to match symbols to pictures from the book.

We used sound buttons to listen to different animal noises and matched them to objects.

All the children in Hawthorn loved exploring the different noises and even made some themselves! Well done everyone.
